
Varsity Eight Advances to Knecht Cup Finals

Camden, N.J. - The Drexel women's crew fought a cold, cross-wind and choppy water on the Cooper River this weekend at the Knecht Cup. The varsity eight raced three times on Saturday and advanced to the finals where they earned a third-place finish. The second varsity eight recorded a fifth-place finish in their heat but failed to qualify for the finals.
The women's varsity eight placed third in their first race of the day with a time of 7:10.3 to advance to the semi-finals. The Dragons raced aggressively and defeated Fordham (7:12.0), who the crew previously lost to at the Murphy Cup Regatta by 12 seconds. The women also edged long-time rival, Lehigh (7:15.5), who twice beat the Dragons this season. The Drexel women improved their performance the second time around, recording a 7:08.5 and a fourth-place finish in the semi-final heat which qualified them for the final competition. The Dragon women placed third in their final heat, crossing the line in 7:15.4. Southern Methodist won the race in 7:09.9 and Villanova edged the Dragons for second in 7:12.1.
In the second varsity eight competition, Drexel crossed the line in 7:54.8 to finish fifth in the second heat. The crew battled some of the nation's powerhouse programs and failed to qualify for finals. Tulsa recorded a finish time of 7:10.5 to win the heat, followed by Holy Cross (7:11.6), Buffalo (7:16.6), and UNC (7:20.7).
